Hello Christine. Yes the webcams have been sorted thanks to you. I am visiting my favourite island in April to see the famous Flower Festival and again in September and Christmas. You are right they have had far more rain than is usual. I was there last Christmas and we had 4days of sunshine out of 14!It is very unusual so lets keep our fingers crossed for sunshine.

One week has passed since the tragic and devasting floods hit Madeira. Fantastic efforts have been made by the local authorities, who have all worked so hard to return our communications, water and electric back to normal. The clean up in the areas that were badly affected is well underway and progressing at an enormous rate, which has already enabled local businesses to open and trade and visitors to wander around and take photos of the enormous work effort. My sincere thanks to all of you who have made pledges and donations to the disaster fund and for all of you who have sent your warm and lovely messages of support.
At least we have a sense of humour!

With regard to the webcam angles, I have e-mailed the approriate contact at Strawberry World and already received a reply saying that this will be rectified as soon as possible. Apparently they have accidently been moved whilst being cleaned.
I received the same quick response when I e-mailed regarding the watermark which was rectified immediately.

i,m phil and i live in the uk (kent ) for the last fourten years ,we visit madeira twice a year as we have a property in the seaside town of calheta. we love to go back for the food and the weather not to mension the
friendly people that we meet everytime when we go there , what happen to the madeirans is a dissaster and i,m sure that most people dont have insurance to cover their lost as madeirans dont belive in wasting money on insurance .(but evan if they had it probably wouldent cover the storm)
there was a few days that we were unable to contact our parents in estreito da calheta but eventualy we managed to speak to them and it was nice to know that they were ok .
as i lived a long time in the uk i feel british in some way but after seing the storm on tv something has toutched me and there is no place like home our heart is with all madeirans that lost their family
and their homes , may god help them !

We were in Madeira at the time of the storm. Do not let it stop you from going back. What an Island so very beautiful and the people... They have worked so hard to restore the place. I am sure that when we return in May there will be no sign of the damage inflicted by good old Mother Nature. I have never seen any body work as hard as they have done. I just hope that our favorite restaurent O Regional in the old time has opened again.

I am from Madeira, but living in London for 10 years now. I've been reading most comments and i have to say that it makes me so happy seeing that last week's disaster hasn't put you off visiting our beautiful island. THANK YOU all, for your support!
Also; for those who would like to visit soon; you should be happy to know that TAP Air Portugal, is starting to offer very low cost flights to Madeira for whoever want to go there for the Flower Festival in May. It's beautiful; you don't want to miss it!

We too would like the web cams restored to their original position. When not visiting Madeira we watch the web cams daily and do not like the new angles. We visit Madeira two or three times year, and we are coming again in April for the Flower Festival.
The wonderful people of Madeira have worked so hard to clear up after the disaster.

It's a pity that the webcam on the Marina Shopping center has been tilted 'upwards' so now you cannot see what is happening around the Rotunda Da Caneiro. I wonder if this was to try and hide some of the mess from viewers? Pointless really as we know the storm hit and that it looks like it is going to keep raining for many days yet.

I live in California and was able to get a hold of my mother's family in Paul do Mar. They said everything was fine there - just the roads in and out were closed for a while.

My mum's family live in Paul do Mar and you don't hear anything about that part of the island and what has happened there. Are the people ok there. I was born in Funchal but live in Australia. I visited their in June 2008, it absolutely beautiful. My heart goes out to Madeira. I hope my relatives are safe and well.

My wife and I have been travelling to Madeira for about 18 years now and were terribly upset by the devastation to the Island. Seeing pictures of the streets we have walked along many times and the shops we have been in buried in mud and rocks is awful.
But the Maderians are an island people and thus, resourceful and are making sterling efforts to clear up the mess.
I have been watching the news broadcasts from RTP over the Internet and even though I do not understand Portuguese, seeing the reports from them has shown just how bad it is.
I haven't heard how things are along the north coast towns of Porto Moniz, Ribeira Da Janela, Seixal & Sao Vicente. Also, I did hear things were bad in Curral Das Freiras but haven't heard any more.

For information regarding the roads and levada/mountain walks you should visit the Madeira island offical website. As you surely understand i can not post the adress here but you can easily google it.
However by the time you arrive at the island, most of the roads and trails should be open.

Does anyone know the status of the road from Funchal via Monte to Pico do Arieiro?
We are going to Madeira in early april, but have not been able to find info about roads up to the mountains.
What about levadas around the island, are they generally closed?
We're having a hard time planning our vacation when we dont know the status of the levadas and roads around the island (yes, we love hiking).
Is there a webpage where such info is available and updated as they progress?

If you have any doubts please contact your travel agent who will be able to offer you alternative accomodation if there are any problems with the hotle you are already booked with.

The road from Ribeira Brava through to Encumeada is closed as this was badly affected by the flood. The hotel may still be cut from communications as is the immediate surrounding area, which is why you cannot get through to them. My advice to you, would be to contact your travel agent regarding this particular hotel as you may be offered alternative accomodation in another area. Please do not let this affect your holiday plans as I am sure that you will still enjoy your vacation as the island still has a lot to offer!

We are still coming to Madeira on the 2 March & bringing our parents for their first time. We are staying at Estalagem Eira do Serrado in Curral das Freiras
but as yet have had no contact from the hotel to confirm the hotel or the road to it is ok. We are doing our bit by still coming to Madeira but the hotel dosnt seem to be helping us with any info. We are now in two minds which is a shame. If anyone knows if the 107 road is ok please let us know.Thanks

Our thoughts are with the Islanders many of whom will have lost all. We will be flying out on the 23rd of March and in October as we have done for many years. Of course our thoughts and prayers are with all of those affected, especially the bereaved and injured.
We know the warm & strong spirited Madeirans will not be beaten by this; you can see it via the webcams the concentration of heavy plant clearance work in progress. With a strong, community spirit ,everyone's involved in the cleaning up of their local streets.
We have not cancelled our holiday and will still be visiting your island in 3 weeks time, as a sign of support.

Richard, I think you have been misinformed and that people who are travelling to Madeira will find that they can have just as good a holiday than they would if they came before the floods. There is a massive clean up operation and more roads have opened today as well as the core fabric of communications and facilities operating as usual. The Portuguese people are working hard to get areas cleared up and and far exceeding original expectations. You will not be stuck in your hotel or suffer from partial facilites, Museums, shops and establishments are open and are operating normally. So for any of you that have not cancelled your holiday to the island, we welcome you with open arms and you will find that you will not be inconvenienced as much as you may think!

So sad, this beautiful island has been devestated. I had the most wonderful holiday there 2 years ago. Thoughts are with the islanders who work so hard to make ends meet in a place where the cost of living is high, as much produce is imported. Madeira desperately needs someone famous to highlight their cause. Maybe the famous footballer Cristiano Ronaldo who was born there would lead a a campaign to help raise funds. My Mother is from Madeira and all her family still live in Funchal. I lived there for 3 years when I was younger and regularly visit the island. I now live in London, England. I just want to say that I am deeply saddened by what has happened in Madeira - my beautiful island. I am doing all I can to get my friends and colleagues to donate some money to the disaster fund and am desperate to help in any way I can. My thoughts are with everyone on the island. My mother's family moved to the U.S. from Porto Moniz after her brother was born. I have been to Madeira three times and always feel like I am going home. Our fourth trip is planned for next year. Jan and I have just returned form our regular February holiday in Madeira.
We are devastated to see the terrible damage and to hear of the tragic loss of life and injury caused by this storm.
We keep thinking about the disaster and how appaling must be the impact on the everyday lives of the Madeiran people.
We are just hoping that none of our Madeiran friends have been too severly affected.
We look forward to holidaying again next year. We are sure the brave Madeiran people will survive as they have when faced with similar disasters in previous years.

I have enjoyed wonderful holidays in Maderia over the last 7 years, it is undoubtably my favourtite holiday resort, and I was saddened, shocked and dismayed by nature's awsome power wrought upon the Island over the weekend. My thoughts and prayers are with the families who have lost loved ones, the injured, those of you have lost there homes and employment.I am sure that in the fullness of time the island will recover, this is obvious from pictuers already showing the clean up in progress and no doubt be even better. Hi my thoughts and heart felt wishes go out to all those who have lost family in this tragic time my parents emergrated to the island a few years ago aand although i had no contact over the last 3 days i have now been in contact and they are safe and well in ponta do sol there second home in tabua unfortunatly didnt survive the storm luckly they left that house hrs before it hit if there is anyway of sending clthes toiletrys toys etc to the island from th uk please let me know my thoughts are with you all . sally hellier xx

I was born in Funchal, jardim Botanico, my family is safe, it is heart breaking to see our pear of the atlantic in such distruction,
I would like to pay my respects to my best friend Rita that has lost several members of her family,

My girlfriend and I only returned from Funchal last week after a fantastic holiday.
It's heartbreaking to see the devastating images. Some really beautiful roads, gardens, businesses and homes look like they will take some time to recover.
My thoughts and prayers are with all those affected.

I too have been shocked and saddened by the news of the flooding and mudslides. My heart goes out to everyone that has been affected by this.
I am due to come to Funchal for a week at the end of March. Unless we hear differently, we are still planning on visiting. I hope that we will be able to help the recovery effort by spending money in local shops and restaurants and reporting that madeira is open again for business. BUT we do not want to be a burden if that is too soon. Any information would be helpful, like the previous two posters have suggested.

Firstly our prayers and concern go out to those that have lost loved ones, property and livelihoods. My husband and I are due to fly to the island for a week's walking holiday on Saturday. We are unable to get a real picture of what it is like out there now and whether we should cancel.....tour operator says flights are operating, the sun is now shining and the walks will go ahead...we have 24 hours to decide before losing all of the money....can anyone give more information, many thanks

Our thoughts are with the people of Madeira.
My parents are planning to visit Madeira in March staying at a well known hotel in Funchal. They are concerned about the damage to the city and if they should cancel their trip. My feeling is that the disaster is very localised and the best way we can support the Madeirenses is to keep the tourism up. How is the situation from a toursit perspevtive?

Both my husband and I live in South Africa, I was born in Funchal and my hubby in Ribeira Brave. When we watched the news, shock and disbelieve was what we experienced. We know that our family is safe and would like to send out our condolences to those who have lost theirs. The Madeira people are in our prays, may God protect and care for all of you!

my wife and i stay in funchal and have don for some years, this is a dusaster for the people of madeira. i hope that everyone we know at the restaurante o violino is ok, we are going out to madeira in mid march wish i was going sooner maybe i could do something to help.

My mother was born in Riberia Brava, now married my family travels there every two years to our home in Riberia Brava. My heart sank as I watched the news, I cried as I spoke to my family over the phone. I am very grateful that they are ok but I still pray for all those living the nightmare right now. We will be going again this August and will have a deeper love for our piece of the island. Prayers to all the Maderian people, My heart is with you all right now.

i am from madeira it really breaks my hart to see that kind of destruction we now days see so many terrible things appening in this world that we never stop to think that it can happen to any of us never in my life i dreamed that i would ever see my wounderfull madeira looking like that im very sad for the people that lost their lifes their hand those that have to start all over again i just hope that people dos not stop going there because madeira needs you now more than ever and thank you for all your support and kind words

Please don't let this terrible tradegy put you off going to the island! It's is a Catch 22 situation - the main economy of Madeira is tourism so don't stay away but show your support. We sincerely hope that our cruise ship due to call in Madeira during April will still do so as we love the island and its people very much.

I'm leaving in London, but i am from the beautiful island of Madeira. I am shocked with the latest events... Luckly nobody died from my family back home, but there were same made homeless due to the floods. I want to take this opportunity to show my deepest respect to the british lady's family, that have died in Madeira due to the bad wetaher.
Also, i would like to thank everybody around the world that has shown us their support!

We go to Madeira about three times a year so its a second home!
We pray for the quick restoration of the island intrastructure but most of all for the needs and well being of the people.

We have been to Madeira many times over the past 35 years, we fell in love with it when we were their in 1975 and when we called back at new year. The feeling is still the same, we were very sadding to see and hear what has happen, our prays and thoughts are with you all at this sad time.God Bless.

We had a lovely holiday in Madeira last year and we intend to book another for this year. We are truly saddened and deeply distressed for the locals and want to tell them our prayers are with them. Madeira is almost like a second home to me and it was shocking to see the footage of the terrible devastation. I feel so sad for the families and communities affected but am confident that the island will pull through and work together.

We enjoyed our 25th wedding anniversary on Madiera last year, we are so sad for the people there. It is /was a lovely place, we are sure it will be again very soon, the people are special, all kind generous and will undoubtedly fight back. It is hard when mother nature acts in this way.
